Hitching up your caravan

Hitching up your caravan

One of the key elements before towing a caravan is to make sure the ball weight on your caravan matches up to the tow vehicles rated ball weight capacity.

Using a Camec ball weight scale, lower the caravan onto the ball weight scale with the jockey wheel, to get an accurate weight of your caravan. Make sure it matches up to your car so you are not travelling over weight. The vehicle plate on the caravan will recommend a ball weight but this doesn’t take into account what you have placed in the caravan. Reverse your vehicle towards the caravan so the tow ball is under the caravan coupling. Lower the caravan down onto the tow ball using the jockey wheel. The jockey wheel will lift off the ground once the weight of the caravan is on the car.

Hitching Up Your Caravan

Ensure the caravan hitch is locked to prevent it from becoming disconnected from the tow vehicle. The Camec jockey wheel can now be taken off and stored in the boot of your caravan.

Connect your safety chains using correctly rated d-shackles. Always ensure that the safety chains are crossed. Connect the trailer plug from the caravan to the tow vehicle

Connect your Camec breakaway system, between the caravan and the tow vehicle. In the event that the caravan becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle while travelling the break-a-way unit will automatically engage the caravan’s brakes.

Release the handbrake on the caravan. Check your brake lights, tail lights and indicators are working. Fit and adjust your towing mirrors. Now your ready to explore this great country.
