If you’ve done any decent kilometres with kids on board, you’ll know one thing pretty quickly. A good caravan bathroom is not a luxury. It is survival.
It only takes one midnight toilet run in thongs, one sandy kid melting down after a beach day, or one questionable amenities block to realise how valuable your own setup really is. When it’s just you, you can rough it. When you’ve got a family in tow, different story.
So if you’re setting up a van for proper touring, here’s what to include in a bathroom that actually works in the real world.
A toilet that keeps you off the grid
Let’s start with the big one.
A composting toilet like the Camec Ecolet is one of those upgrades that changes how you travel. Straight up. No more chasing dump points every couple of days, no more planning stops around emptying a cassette, and no more dealing with that job when you really don’t feel like it.
When you’ve got kids, flexibility is everything. Plans change, stops blow out, and sometimes you’re camped well away from anywhere with facilities. Having a toilet onboard that doesn’t rely on a traditional system just takes a massive weight off your shoulders.
And there’s the obvious stuff too. Middle of the night, kid wakes up, needs the toilet. You’re not dragging them outside into the cold or the rain or wandering around with a head torch. You’re sorted, right there.
It’s cleaner, it’s simpler, and it lets you stay out longer without the usual headaches.

A shower that handles real mess
Kids and dirt go hand in hand. Whether it’s sand, mud, salt, sunscreen or all of the above, they’ll find a way to bring it back into the van.
That’s where a proper shower setup earns its keep.
The Camec shower tray hits a good balance. It’s compact enough to work in tighter bathroom layouts, but still gives you enough room to actually function without feeling like you’re standing in a bucket. And that matters when you’re trying to rinse off a wriggling kid or clean up after a big day out.
A decent shower base also keeps things where they should be. Water stays contained, the rest of the bathroom stays dry, and you’re not constantly wiping things down after every use.
At the end of a long day, being able to get everyone clean, quickly and without drama is worth its weight in gold. It turns chaos into a routine you can actually manage.

Ventilation that stops things getting rank
Here’s one people overlook until it’s too late.
Bathrooms in caravans cop a hammering. Steam from showers, wet towels, damp clothes, it all builds up fast. Add a couple of kids into the mix and you’ve basically got a humidity machine on wheels.
A roof vent like the Elixir 12V unit makes a huge difference. It pulls moisture out, keeps air moving, and stops that closed-in, muggy feeling you get when everything stays damp for too long.
It also helps keep smells under control, which is something you’ll appreciate, especially with a fully functioning family bathroom onboard.
Simple upgrade, massive payoff. You’ll notice it every single day.
Tapware that just works
Tapware is one of those things you don’t think about until it annoys you.
In a caravan, it needs to be tough, compact and easy to use. No fiddly controls, no awkward angles. When kids are brushing their teeth, washing hands, or trying to help themselves, you want something that just works without drama.
Good tapware also helps you stay on top of water usage. When you’re off-grid, every drop counts. Smooth, controlled flow means less waste and more time between refills.
It’s a small piece of the puzzle, but it plays a big role in keeping your day running smoothly.

Why it matters when you’re travelling as a family
All of this comes back to one thing. Making life on the road easier.
When your caravan bathroom is dialled in, everything flows better. You’re not relying on park facilities, you’re not dealing with unnecessary stress, and you’re not constantly solving problems that could have been avoided.
You’ve got a toilet when you need it, a shower that can handle the mess, airflow that keeps things comfortable, and fittings that work without fuss. Allowing you to adventure off grid.
