Keep on top of your caravan maintenance

Caravan maintenance and servicing is all part of making sure you have a safe trip. Just like your house, RVs need regular maintenance to ensure that everything is in good working order and your can travels are hassle free.

So when was the last time you had your caravan, camper trailer, motorhome or camper van serviced?

Caravan and RV servicing is important and shouldn’t be ignored. There are two types of caravan servicing the first service and the annual service. The first service is generally undertaken within the first 12 months of ownership or when the RV travels around 2000 kilometers. It is often the service that highlights any signs of abnormal weakness or any concerns you have with the RV. Annual servicing should occur at least once per year or every 10,000 kilometres. Even if your van has been sitting idle, you should still give it the attention it needs which will save you time and money in the long run. Also use an expert service agent to assist with your service for piece of mind.

Some things you can do in the short term to help reduce the maintenance required on your RV.

Tip 1

If you aren’t using your RV very often, we suggest storing it in an undercover area, or under a caravan cover. Covering your RV protects it from the elements and reduced the risk of damage from falling debris. (Camec caravan covers)

Tip 2

Poor tyre maintenance is on the most common causes of caravan accidents in Australia. Age, excess sun and road wear will affect the condition of your caravan and motorhome tyres. If you see any cracks or anything unusual about your tyres it time for them to be changed. Avoid using tyres that are older than 5 years even if they don’t appear to show signs of wear and tear. They will also save you from having to change a tyre on the side of the road.

Cleaning your caravan is not the first thing you want to do when you get home but allowing dirt to build up on your RV can lead to serious surface damage. It is important to ensure you’ve got the correct cleaning tools and agents and that it is properly cleaned before storing the RV away until your next trip.

Tip 4

Caravan door seals, window seals should be checked for leaks regularly. The older the seal the more likely it is to leak or after withstanding hot, dry and dusty condition become cracked. You service agent will be able to help you install new seals if you find you have a leak.
